Country School

This winter has been really cold... it started me thinking about living in Saskatchewan when I was growing up. My Dad was a teacher in a one room school, and we lived in the teacher's house right in one corner of the school yard. Click on the picture to see the details.

This photo was taken on a winter day...showing the winter transportation of the time! On the left side of the photo is a "caboose", which was basically a covered horse-drawn sled, and sometimes housed a wood stove for warmth (just a little danger there!!). There is also a larger horse drawn Posted by Picasasled on the right. In the middle, there is a "stone boat" which was like a flat toboggan. You stood on it while holding the reins (and had to have good balance!) The barn for the horses is on the right.
I am in the picture toward the right, with another girl.

You might think this would be in "pioneer " times, but it was in the 1950's.

I will add that my Dad was the best teacher anyone could have. He made learning a good experience and always had a new idea for the school. We had every club going, Audobon, Red Cross, 4H, etc., etc.

Wow, I love seeing the photo and reading how you lived and learned. Very unique and fascinating.

That was some means of transportation!

I found you via a comment that you made a long time ago at my blog. Because I didn't recognize your name nor your blog, I think that I have been very remiss in thanking you for letting me know that you made one of my recipes. That was very thoughtful of you. Usually, one gets no feedback whatsoever. I think I've had two people say that the recipe had turned out well and you were the only one on that selection.

So, whether I did thank you or whether I didn't, I'm awfully glad to have visited you today.

Thank you!
